Born and raised in a small town in Upstate New York called Sodus (the real Upstate New York by the way … as in west of the Hudson … as in a couple hundred miles from the Canadian border), I graduated from Sodus Central School (Go Spartans!) and went on to higher education at Carnegie Mellon University (Go Tartans!).
After two and a half years at CMU, I decided it wasn’t for me. I spent eight months in Orlando, participating in the Walt Disney World College Program (Spring ’99) and then returned home to regroup. Deciding to move back to Florida, I was accepted to the University of South Florida where I graduated cum laude in 2002 with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications-Public Relations.
Working for a living isn’t as fun as you would think, so I decided to indulge in one of passions, creative writing, when determining what graduate school to attend. I researched available programs from Maine to Washington State and finally decided to attend one of my hero’s (George Lucas’) alma mater, University of Southern California. After a start, a stop and a start again, I moved to California in January 2007 and began my Master’s degree.
By moving to Los Angeles, my life changed pretty dramatically. I met people (both in person and online) who had similar interests and loved to sit around and talk about TV shows (including the nerdy sci-fi ones that I liked). Through my classes at SC I was exposed to some phenomenal writers and some unbelievable personalities and I know my writing has grown as a result.
I have been able to attend conventions for everything from books (LA Times Festival of Books) to Firefly/Serenity. I walked the picket line with other writers on Mutant Enemy day at Fox Studios during the 2008 WGA Writer’s Strike. I have heard Joss Whedon, Ron D. Moore and George Lucas speak. I have had my picture taken with Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Katee Sackhoff and Jamie Bamber. I have seen Tahmoh Penikett, Gina Torres, Nathan Fillion, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Mark Sheppard and Adam Baldwin in person. And I have experienced that rare and incomparable event that is Comic-Con, twice.
I graduated with my Master’s degree from USC in May 2009. My concentration in the program was fiction and I finished a young adult manuscript as my thesis. I also met my writing partner, April, and together we have finished a novelization of a TV pilot we created called Four. As we are in the process of querying agents, I am doing double duty by querying for my own novel, Book of Secrets, Volume 1 which was selected as Quarterfinalist for the 2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award and one of five finalists for the NASEP 2011 Book of the Year. During the day, I work as digital marketing strategist for the Tribune Company and try to stay cool in humid Orlando where I now reside.
